Minister honours women in technology

Minister for Women Karen Struthers has congratulated the Mining Industry Skills Centre for winning the Women in Technology’s inaugural employer of choice award.

Ms Struthers attended the Women in Technology’s 12th annual awards gala dinner in Brisbane tonight.

“I want to congratulate the Mining Industry Skills Centre for its commitment to boosting women’s participation in the industry,” she said.

“It’s a worthy winner of the award and it’s doing a great job developing women’s skills and advancing their careers.

“The centre has been instrumental in helping female employees to achieve their full potential, as have the other finalists and nominees in this category.”

The Employer of Choice Award is sponsored by the Queensland Government’s Office for Women.

It recognises employers that demonstrate leadership in delivering employees with a more flexible, equal, family friendly and accommodating workplace.

Ms Struthers encouraged more women to take up careers in the information and communication technology sectors.

“In 2007, women represented less than 18 per cent of full time employees in Queensland’s technology industry, just a one per cent increase on a decade earlier,” she said.

“We want to see more women break down barriers and forge careers in technology and other traditionally male-dominated fields.

“These awards and our Women in Hard Hats initiative are all about breaking down gender stereotypes.”

The Women in Technology Awards also recognise individual women succeeding in information and communication technology and biotechnology careers across seven other categories.

“I also congratulate the winners and finalists of each of the other award categories for the success they have achieved in their respective fields of expertise,” Ms Struthers said.
