Housing Minister Karen Struthers said today that the Bligh Government was on track and on target in its roll out of more than 4,000 new social housing dwellings across Queensland.
Minister Struthers said 75% of the new dwellings would be built by December next year, with 525 new homes expected to be completed by June next year.
“It’s action stations in Queensland. It’s an unprecedented investment in social housing in Queensland and it will help kick start local economies,” Ms Struthers said.
“It couldn’t have come at a better time with jobs and job security more important than ever before.
“It’s a win for workers in the local building industry and a win for people who need a roof over their head.
“We’re also spending $80 million on repairs and maintenance to spruce up our existing social housing stock,” Ms Struthers said.
Minister Struthers said the $1.2 billion investment in social housing under the Nation Building and Economic Stimulus Plan was on top of the Bligh Government’s $500 million building program.
“We’ve entered an exciting new era in social housing in Queensland. We’re building new ones and sprucing up our existing ones. We’re also buying up old motels and giving them a motel makeover.
“More often than not, you’ll find our social housing is the best-looking house in the street,” she said.
