Gold Coast surveyors to plot Rapid route

Gold Coast residents will see the first signs of construction on the much-anticipated Gold Coast Rapid Transit project, with survey works underway along the 13km corridor.

Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan said today that surveyors from two Gold Coast companies had begun mapping sections of the corridor in Southport, paving the way for the start of design and construction work.

“The start of survey activities along the rapid transit corridor signals the beginning of the delivery of this vital project and the associated benefits for the Gold Coast economy,” Ms Nolan said.

“This project has engaged two local surveying companies to carry out the work over the next three months, another example of the Queensland Government’s commitment to delivering local jobs."

Ms Nolan said Gold Coast MPs Peter Lawlor (Southport), Margaret Keech (Albert), Christine Smith (Burleigh), and Peta-Kaye Croft (Broadwater) were strong supporters of the light rail project.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said detailed surveying being conducted now in the Southport area would support construction activity across the Gold Coast for the next four years.

“We know how important construction and tourism are to the Gold Coast – this project will create an iconic and essential piece of tourism infrastructure for the future,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project is the first of its kind in Australia and will generate 6,300 jobs. The appointment of these local companies is just the beginning of what I am sure will be an ongoing boost to the Gold Coast economy.

“This survey work is another step forward in what will be one of the most forward-thinking government projects ever undertaken, both in terms of the technologies used and the degree of partnership between all three levels of government.”

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project is scheduled to commence operations in early 2014.
