STATE AWARDS TARGET TRAINING STARS

Hairdressing, horse racing, aeroskills and administration are among the industries to be represented at the 48th Queensland Training Awards state finals next month.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the State Government’s longest-running and most prestigious vocational awards had attracted more than 600 statewide nominations, which had been narrowed down to 48 finalists.

“These awards showcase the hard work and dedication that is furthering careers, boosting local economies and enriching the lives and professional experiences of Queenslanders,” Mr Wilson said.

“Our world-class education and training opportunities provide a competitive advantage in a global market, where it’s imperative to stay at the cutting edge.

“The Queensland Training Awards recognise the importance of skills training and the wide-ranging benefits for both individuals and communities alike."

Mr Wilson said high-quality training was more important than ever as the State Government and industry worked through the current economic downturn.

“The revitalised Queensland Skills Plan 2008 is a key component of our response to this challenge with its focus on skilling, re-skilling and up-skilling.

“The emphasis continues on growing school-based apprenticeships, already up 51 percent since 2006.

“The 48 state finalists, who were announced at six regional finals last month, will now have the chance to progress to the state final at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 11 September."

The State winners can go on to compete for cash prizes at the Australian Training Awards in Canberra on November 19 2009.
