Nine young indigenous Mackay women have a new insight and skills in construction thanks to the Bligh Government.
The nine are all graduating this Friday (31 July) from a Bligh Government-funded training program at the Central Queensland institute of TAFE.
Minister for Women Karen Struthers today congratulated the nine graduates, aged18 to 22, for successfully completing the Indigenous Women on the Move trades training program.
“Indigenous women are vastly under-represented in non-traditional industries such as mining and construction – industries that are vital to Central Queensland,” she said.
“The Bligh Government is committed to creating opportunities for Indigenous women through stable and meaningful training and employment.
“These young women now have practical knowledge and work skills, and a real taste of the industry.”
As part of their 18-week program, the nine graduates obtained construction industry blue cards, required for access to construction sites, as well as a range of nationally-recognised vocational competencies including using hand and power tools, safe work and welding practices.
“The program has been a great success in improving the graduates’ employability and potential for economic security,” he said.
“But it will also deliver benefits to local industry through access to skilled, job-ready women who can bring much-needed diversity to workplaces.
“I congratulate each of the graduates on their outstanding achievement and wish them the best in securing a rewarding new trade apprenticeship or career.”
The Office for Women funding covered the participants’ course fees, full-time mentoring support, a two-week vocational placement and employment assistance.
Participants will be recognised for their successful completion of the program at a graduation ceremony to be held on Friday, 31 July at the Sky Restaurant, Mackay.
