Jobs our number one priority: Fraser
Generating and supporting jobs remains the Bligh Government’s number one priority, Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said while visiting Townsville today.
In town visiting Wulguru Steel, Townsville’s second largest metal fabrication business and employer of 92 staff, Mr Fraser said now more than ever, governments had to be focused on fighting rising unemployment.
“The Bligh Government is committed to jobs, that’s why we have focused all our energies on righting off rising unemployment in the face of the global recession,” Mr Fraser said.
“Companies like Wulguru Steel are leading the way. With the downturn in the mining sector risking the employment of 50 staff, Wulguru Steel has found alternative work that is protecting jobs.
“This week, they’ve employed five new tradesmen – four boiler-makers and a fitter-and turner.
“Every single job counts – that’s why the Government is working hard to help the private sector find opportunities to increase their workforce.
“The State Government has worked closely with Wulguru Steel through the Queensland Manufacturing Institute to increase their efficiency and competitiveness in the market.
“Recently the company completed a productivity improvement exercise to help measure current practices and performance levels and assist in identifying new market opportunities.
“This kind of assistance can prove invaluable to local businesses attempting to compete interstate and internationally.”
Member for Townsville Mandy Johnstone said as well as industry support, the Bligh Government had kick-started its own recruitment campaign.
“Two weeks ago the Premier launched the Green Army, a $57 million initiative to put 3000 Queenslanders into work,” Ms Johnstone said.
“This is a chance to get paid for work that will have a big impact on the local community. Potential projects are being assessed, but anyone in Townsville can join the Green Army by going to www.greenarmy.qld.gov.au or calling 1800 249 215.”
