Help for women and children escaping violence

Two important organisations in Lockhart River and on Thursday Island that provide crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence will share in more than $1.8 million in funds over three years, Minister for Community Services Karen Struthers said today.

Minister Struthers said the funds would help the Lena Passi Women’s Shelter on Thursday Island and the Pytham Women’s Shelter at Lockhart River to continue to support women and children in the community.

“Women and children need somewhere to turn and someone to turn to when times are tough. That’s what these funds are all about,” Ms Struthers said.

The Minister said the funds would also help support the jobs of eight people who work in the two organisations.

“I commend the staff at the Lena Passi Women’s Shelter and the Pytham Women’s Shelter for the work they do,” Ms Struthers said.

“They’re giving women and children somewhere safe to stay and a roof over their head when they need it most.

“This funding package, over three years, means they can continue to do what they do best and that is to look after women and children in troubled times.

“They need to know that funds will be available next year and the year after that. It allows the two organisations to plan ahead with certainty,” Ms Struthers said.
