The Bligh Government has funded Legal Aid Queensland more than $4.5 million over three years to provide court support for women affected by domestic and family violence.
Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said the funding was part of the Bligh Government’s Toward Q2 vision to create a safe and fairer Queensland. This funding will be used to support women who are at risk of abuse and harm.
“Women who are experiencing abusive situations often find the legal process intimidating. It takes a great deal of courage to enter a court-room and face a perpetrator.
“Often women feel too intimidated to speak out about the violence and abuse they suffer. That’s why the support, advocacy and advice provided by Legal Aid’s Women’s Domestic Violence Court Assistance program is so important.
“The court support provided by Legal Aid, helps abused women obtain protection orders that legally require violent and abusive partners to keep their distance.”
Minister Struthers said that domestic and family violence was being taken seriously by the Bligh Government.
“That’s why in addition to funding domestic violence support services across Queensland, the Government is supporting Family Violence Prevention Month which runs from 1 to 31 May.
“This is about sending a clear message that violence in the home is unacceptable and it should not be tolerated for any reason.
“Violence of any kind in our community needs to be stopped. The Rudd Government’s $26 million public information campaign to change attitudes and behaviours that contribute to violence in our community will be an important step in achieving this aim.”
Minister Struthers urged anyone who is experiencing domestic or family violence to seek assistance.
“Women can phone the DV connect helpline 24 hours a day on 1800 811 811. Men requiring assistance can phone the DV connect Mensline on 1800 600 636,” she said.
