Gold Coast service gets $3M to stop family violence deaths

The Domestic Violence Regional Service Gold Coast will receive almost $3 million towards its domestic and family violence prevention programs.

Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said the Domestic Violence Regional Service had been working to prevent violence and assist Gold Coastwomen and children for more than 16 years.

“The Bligh Government is committed to preventing domestic violence across Queensland. Violence and abuse especially in the home is completely unacceptable,” Ms Struthers said.

“Almost $3 million will be allocated over three years to Domestic Violence Regional Service Gold Coast to enable them to continue their important work.

“This funding will be used to provide counselling, police-assisted referral programs, court assistance, male perpetrator programs, community education and staff training.

“In addition to providing much needed support for the Gold Coast community, the funding also means that 36 jobs stay in the local area.

Ms Struthers said that violence prevention was an important issue not just in Queensland but across Australia.

“I welcome the Rudd Government’s recent Time for Action report of the National Council to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children,” she said.

“The Bligh Government looks forward to working with the Rudd Government to progress the recommendations from this important report.

“The Prime Minister’s recent announcement of over $12.5 million for a new national telephone and online crisis service shows how seriously domestic violence is being taken nationally.

“The Rudd Government has also allocated $17 million for a public information campaign to change attitudes and behaviours that contribute to violence in our community.”

Minister Struthers thanked the Domestic Violence Regional Service Gold Coast for their important work in the local community.
